From the time my son could stand at the side of the coffee table, he was a self-proclaimed music lover.  Never mind the fact that he couldn't tell us with words yet, or that he was years away from learning an instrument formally. His love for music was obvious because the music made him bop his knees and smile, all while drool pooled on his shirt collar.

You've started the year with high hopes for your child's music lessons, and so far, things seem to be going well.  But before the newness of music lessons wears off and your child's excitement wanes, read this to be well-positioned for any pitfalls that are coming throughout the year.

Is there a way to still enjoy vacation without the burden of practicing looming over you? Here are my ideas to keep your child's practicing streak alive... even when you're away from home.

Often, students and parents begin summer break with the best intentions to practice daily. "We'll have so much time!" we say.  But when the lazy days of summer finally arrive, a day or two away from practicing turns into three or four, and suddenly it becomes more and more difficult to get back to practicing.  "They're children!" we say. Listen to moans and complains and negotiations about who is not going first and how unfair life is. 2. 10 minutes later, head to practice space.  Call most compliant child. Check social media on phone. 3. After 2-3 minutes of mindless scrolling on social media, call most compliant child AGAIN, because sai...

Naturally, students often wonder if they can bend the rules a bit to meet their practice goals. For example:  "I miss a day of practice, can I do double the next day?"

To say we value practicing at Upper Beaches Music School would be the understatement of the century.  But practicing takes motivation... enter this year's practice challenge.

To kick things off this year and get us back into a solid practice routine, we're implementing a practice challenge for the month of October.  The challenge to each student: to meet practice goals set by their private teacher.  The Goal: to establish a better p...
